Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering
to any animal. This includes prolonged dematting, which can be painful and stressful
for your dog.
Honey Paws Dog Grooming has assessed your dog’s coat and found it to be
severely matted. In this condition, the most humane and least stressful option is to
clip the coat short. Removing matted hair is necessary for your dog’s comfort, health,
and welfare.
When a coat becomes tangled beyond the point where it can be safely brushed or
combed out, shaving off the matted coat is the quickest and kindest solution.
Although it may appear drastic, it prevents further discomfort and reduces stress for
your dog.
A severely matted coat can cause significant pain as the mats pull tightly on the skin.
It can also hide underlying health conditions that may not be visible until the coat is
removed. Once the coat is clipped short, it is not uncommon to see areas of sore,
reddened, or irritated skin. This occurs because the skin has been covered and
unable to breathe properly, and air circulation is being restored.
• Skin irritation caused by dirt, dander, and parasites trapped beneath the coat
• Sores, bruising, and hair loss
• In severe cases, infestation of wounds (including maggots)
• Skin conditions such as hotspots, sores, and infections becoming visible after
removal
• Irritation caused by close clipping
• Ear bruising or hematomas due to excessive head shaking after mat removal
I confirm that I have read and understood the above information and give permission
for Honey Paws Dog Grooming to proceed with clipping my dog’s coat short.
I release Honey Paws Dog Grooming from responsibility for any issues that may
arise as a result of the shaving or dematting process. I also agree to pay any
additional charges required due to the extra time involved and increased wear to
equipment.
I understand that, on this occasion, personal grooming preferences cannot be taken
into account and that grooming will be carried out in the best interest of my dog’s
welfare.
Any skin irritation following the removal of a matted coat is a common outcome of the
process and is not the responsibility of the groomer. Veterinary advice may be
required in rare cases.
Matted coats can be prevented through daily brushing using a slicker brush and
comb. Your groomer at Honey Paws Dog Grooming will be happy to demonstrate
correct brushing techniques and recommend a suitable grooming schedule to
maintain your dog’s coat.
Regular grooming appointments and consistent at-home care will help maintain your
preferred style and keep your dog comfortable and mat-free.
